Seattle Slew Colt in Japan Has International Ambitions by Ray Paulick Date Posted: 11/28/00 4:49:06 PM Last Updated: 11/28/00 4:49:06 PM Slew the World could be an appropriate name for a 2-year-old Seattle Slew colt who most recently finished second in a turf stakes at Tokyo Race Course on Nov. 26. If all goes the way his connections would like, Slew the World will take on some of Europe and Dubai's top 3-year-olds in the UAE Derby (UAE-III) next March 24 and then travel to the United States and attempt to win the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) on the first Saturday in May. The colt, produced by the Riverman mare Dream Touch (herself from the gr. I-winning mare Weber City Miss, also the dam of gr. I Oaklawn Handicap winner Slew City Slew), was bred in Kentucky by Joseph Allen and was entered in the 1999 Keeneland July yearling sale, where he was bought back by consignor Middlebrook Farm, agent, for $145,000. He was sent to Japan earlier this year and is in the hands of the nation's leading trainer Kazuo Fujisawa. Slew the World didn't race until Nov. 5, finishing fifth in a maiden event, then won a seven-furlong maiden on Nov. 19. He came back just a week later to lose by a neck in the Begonia Stakes on the undercard of the Japan Cup (Jpn-I). Nobutaka Tada, who manages Slew the World for the ownership club Southnear Co., understands the difficulty of the challenge he has mapped out. Tada was formerly racing manager for Taiki Farm, which sent the Fujisawa-trained Taiki Blizzard postward twice in the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I), finishing 13th in 1996 and sixth in 1997. "This is an ambitious dream," Tada said, "but we think this is a good colt. If all goes right, we'll see you in Kentucky." |
